Authorities
Ladies and Gentlemen Good afternoon
is very exciting and emotional for me this act for reasons that are easy to guess.
The Virtual Library Miguel de Cervantes that is ten years, long anticipated in the major projects now underway in Europe and worldwide. It was almost from its inception the English flagship among a set of pioneering initiatives that drove universities like Stanford, Harvard, University of California-Berkeley, Michigan and Cornell . Today we can say that our Virtual Library Miguel de Cervantes has ended up being the most outstanding project, most universal and most widespread of all that took place during those years. Thanks
Let me, briefly, because it is right, remember, first, exemplary and enthusiastic work of an exceptional team at my university who was instrumental in overcoming many technological limitations and of all kinds. Today many are here: Paloma by Talton, Laura Sánchez, Francisco Aura and many others.
In addition, generous support, much more than a sponsorship, the Santander Group. An unconditional and enthusiastic support, an exquisite understanding of how we work in college. Also thank you very much, Jose Antonio Villasante and José Manuel Moreno. Looking
present and after ten years of operation, the Virtual Library Miguel de Cervantes has achieved a privileged place in an area where technology, science and the humanities are integrated and brilliantly successful.
Two simple keys, but very valuable, helped us move forward in those early years and still effective today. One, have a team where the computer thought in literary terms and humanists, professors of literature and economists are struggling to understand computer science.
Another, a strong dedication to America from its beginnings under the leadership of Professor José Carlos Rovira, the first academic director of the Library, supported by the Vice Chancellor of Institutional Relations, Ana Laguna, which launched an action plan with countries like Mexico , Chile, Argentina and Peru to integrate and involve major National Libraries and institutions of these countries. In this context we should add, for example, the treatment of absolute privilege with authors such as Mario Bendetti of these days we mourn his loss, and it is well to remember his beloved and generous support, valuable cediéndonos his poems, along with photos, videos and your own voice. Mario Benedetti always be among us.
Virtual Library Miguel de Cervantes and his future
I asked our Rector Ignacio Jimenez to outline a few lines about the future of the library on the basis of a strategic plan developed two years ago and have been working in a very efficient teachers and Pedro Manuel Marco Pernías, along with deputy director of the Biblioteca Rafael Carrasco.
In this regard, Cervantes has reflected major technological changes occurred in recent years to adapt to the future, without sacrificing its primordial and fundamental vocation: to be the Virtual Library of English .
Your challenge is to build a new technology platform that hosts the biggest innovations in the field. This will allow further progress among the best currently existing digitization projects. Also in this environment are desirable alliances and partnerships. It is worth quoting fruitful ongoing collaboration with Stanford University today -leader in technology issues, and with the European Library project ( Europeana .)
aspires to be a new Virtual Library 2.0 in line with the new methodologies that are currently promoting the development of knowledge. In other words, it aspires to be a meeting point where reconcile pioneering academic rigor, collective intelligence and innovation. The latter still really impressive advances in store for us as paper or electronic ink, the semantic web and the developments resulting from artificial intelligence.
said base is essential technology in an environment where we live with digitization projects driven by large sites such as Google and Microsoft . Although it should be recalled here that the contributions of our library far exceed the scope of a simple scanning of books.
Among the essential technological innovations should be noted adaptation of the Library or Web 2.0 social web to accommodate the role of user communities . The objective of the Cervantes will reconcile the importance of the user, but not at any time waive the philological rigor in the treatment of the texts and the academic focus on project management.
Current work in the Library have moved or are moving from a very important technology issues search, the user's role cited in navigation and the creation of social spaces, on-demand printing, the design of spaces for teaching and education in general ... are a small list of the successful work carried out by the team Cervantes current.
As an example of these advances, concretaré one of the greatest importance: l of dissemination of the contents of the Library through any mobile device . The increasing use among users of "Portalibros", a term proposed by Darío Villanueva, director of the Scientific Council of the Virtual Library Miguel de Cervantes, to refer to the e-readers and e-books , gives a great opportunity for our Library. Thus, Cervantes will be able to develop the first Mobile Portal cultural content in English, offering a large catalog of works by leading authors in our language so they can be played on any mobile device, including mobile art generation.
Past, Present and Future of the Library are matched in this tenth anniversary of our library with the presence of a renewed enthusiasm that was very present since creation.
Allow me to finish, he recalled, there by 1998 the stimulus providing us the personal support of President Don Emilio Botin . Admirably supported by the project since the first time I had the opportunity to present it. I have to admit that the support they gave at that time a leading economist, left us no choice but to work day and night with the greatest ambition and enthusiasm.
Let me acknowledge my enormous debt to him, his staff and members of my community college. That same ambition and enthusiasm I have found that is present to meet new and exciting additional ten years. Thank
. Andrés Pedroza
