Guerrero: miserable , desperate and persecuted work culture

Pedro Echeverria V.

1. I just got an email from a human being if not a native, a farmer, a teacher who is "in the high sierra of Guerrero fleeing government repression after leaving jail for fighting in earth. " Did not give me more explanation, or wish learn to write and imprison him again. But his words asking me to write about them, and their greeting in a few words, makes me think the conditions of despair in which they live. And seek not invent situations, I just remember the history of this state of Guerrero, the enormous exploitation and poverty that face their people, centuries of persecution and struggle in the mountains, terrible bosses and landlords who have occupied government neglect health and education services and murder as those suffered by the copreros in 1964, as well as Jenaro Vázquez, Lucio Cabañas and 17 peasants in Aguas Blancas in 1995.

2. If the state of Guerrero is not the most economically wretched country is one of the three where the population has been exploited and persecuted of the Republic. Poverty in Guerrero ranks third nationally, trailing only Chiapas and Oaxaca, but in this state is located one of the poorest areas of Mexico, the Mountain region (high and low), where we find the poorest municipalities Mexico, whose living standards are similar to those of some of the poorest regions of Africa. Migration is very acute in the state of Guerrero, every year, according to INEGI Migration, 73,000 Guerrero migrate to the U.S.. Guerrero is in first place nationally in internal migration and migration fifth external. [] About 128,000 day laborers leave during the summer in the north, ie to states such as Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua and Baja California, while many migrate directly to the U.S..

3. Perhaps the economic situation in the state of Guerrero show that the "tourism industry" has only served to enrich a few big business while the people get nothing (or almost all) of the billions of dollars in tourism traders : hotel, restaurant, transport, receive in Taxco, Zihuatanejo and Acapulco. While Guerrero has great potential to develop agriculture, fisheries in small, crafts and others, for lack of an organized market investments and 70 percent of the population lives in poverty and despair. Guerrero has just over three million inhabitants but has a vast territory owned by extensive woods, good land, forests and rivers. Have not been adequately exploited their natural resources because the chiefdom and the large property in that region are controlled by a few families.

4. Acapulco, the main tourist port in the country since it was created during the administration of German Valdes until the eighties, has only produced enormous wealth for the few. Acapulco apparently repeated the example of Cuba in the 50's, when the governments of Batista and ancestors were dedicated to protect the billionaire Cuban and foreigners who did huge business around tourism. As Acapulco, La Habana, was always full of foreign tourists while Cuba suffered an acute unemployment and poverty of the population spread. One of the causes of migration in Guerrero is unemployment, especially among indigenous groups, since it can not provide employment to 79% of its inhabitants. [] In the Mountain area, there are plenty of individuals who work as laborers, most of them illiterate and children. It is the most sad and miserable in the country and the government gives a damn.

5. Every day between 50 and 60 Guerrero attempting to cross the border, raises the secretariat Guerrero's social development. [] Following the signing of NAFTA in 1993, the U.S. implemented Operation Gatekeeper, increasing the risks of crossing the border wall. In the seventies, as is known, the state of Guerrero was the scene of several opposition movements of the PRI regime in the country. Driven by the lack of attention to their demands and repression of peaceful struggle, farmers and teachers, including Lucio Cabañas and Genaro Vázquez-opted for armed struggle. For years they were in the mountains of Guerrero pressuring the government to solve people's problems. In 1972 he died "in an accident" Genaro Vazquez, was kidnapped in 1874 Ruben Figueroa (senator and future governor of Guerrero state) giving rise to a brutal repression by the military. Soon Cabañas was killed while others were detained and disappeared. Read
